PART 4

I quickly called his sister and told her what happened, she told me they would come the next day cos it was late to start coming from the village. I watched my boyfriend go through severe pain, he couldn't sit, can't turn his head, can't raise his legs, he was just lying helplessly and crying. The only words he kept muttering to me was that he doesn't want to die.

The next morning, his leg was swollen and I drew the attention of the doctor to it. He came and after examining him, he asked me to take him for an x-ray and CT scan. I checked my boyfriend's account balance and it was N930,000. I left to get a bus that will take us to the diagnostic centre, before I got back his sister was already there.

It was my first time of seeing her, I greeted her and her response was "pray nothing happens to him else you will have questions to answer". I was shocked to even utter a word. I just told her that I was about taking him for x-ray before she came so she can join us if she wants.

We got to the diagnostic centre and had the x-ray and CT scan done which cost us almost 400k. The result showed that he broke his spinal cord and he will possibly not be able to stand on his feet again. It was at that moment that I broke down in tears. The doctor said he needs to undergo surgery and it will cost us 3 million naira but we can make a deposit of 1.8 million for them to commence the surgery.

I couldn't tell my boyfriend all that the doctor said, I was still looking for a way to tell him not knowing that his sister has told him already when I left to get his drugs.

I came back and my boyfriend started asking me to take him to his village, that there's no point looking for money cos there's no where we can get such money.

He told me that it's better for him to die than to be in a wheelchair knowing that his family doesn't really care about him and he doesn't want to be a burden to me cos I have no money to cater for myself let alone taking care of him.

I tried to calm him down and give him hope but he wasn't listening. He even got angry with me and refused to speak anymore word to me. His sister was there and wasn't even behaving like they are related by blood. She didn't show any atom of pity. I had to ask her if my boyfriend was truly her brother and she said that they were step-siblings.

From that day onwards, my boyfriend became more hostile to me, refused eating or taking his drugs. He was trying his best to push me away, he kept telling me to go back to the house and continue my work.

I was loosing my mind, I was still wearing the same clothes I wore on the day he had the accident. I looked like a shadow of myself, slimmed down like someone with a very bad disease.

I had no one to comfort me except our neighbors who came to see him and my madam at work. My sister never called or visited us and I'm very sure she and her husband heard what happened cos the news spread allover.

I went to the toilet and cried my heart out for some minutes, when I came out his sister had already grabbed the bag containing all the money people who came to see him dropped for him. The bag also contained his ATM and phone.

I asked her what she was doing with it and she said it will be in her custody from now henceforth since it's her brother's belonging. I was already very mad with her and needed to show her a little bit of it but there was up to 9 other patients there so I swallowed my anger.

I went to my boyfriend's bedside to cover him properly and noticed he was no longer breathing but his eyes were open and tears were rolling out so I ran out and called the doctor.

The doctor came, examined him, stretched his body properly and gently covered his face with his wrapper. I asked why he covered him that way and he told me my boyfriend was dead already. I felt a heavy rush of dizziness and fainted..."
